Every grade of steel created at Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works (MMK), one of the world’s largest steel producers and a leading steel company in Russia, must meet international quality standards and certificates. By balancing the ferroalloy additions, the steel company has a chance to achieve maximum profit while producing high-quality, reliable products.
Each specific grade of steel is created through melting a mix of components, including cast iron, scrap metal, and a variety of ferroalloys. The international standards for steel list a specified range for the amounts of each chemical element in the final mix. This fact creates one of the biggest challenges MMK has to face daily: how to optimise the steelmaking process in order to create a product that achieves the industry’s highest standards while ensuring maximum profit.
Yandex Data Factory created a recommender system, integrated into MMK’s software, that helps reduce ferroalloy use by an average of 5%. This equates to annual savings of more than $4 million in production costs, while maintaining the same high quality of resultant steel.
